Blog #1: Construction Communication Is Broken (And No One Treats It Seriously)

Construction communication is broken.

Not “could be better.” Not “room for improvement.”
Broken.

And the worst part? Almost no one treats it like a real problem.

We treat safety like life or death—because it is.
We treat budgets like survival—because they are.
But communication? That gets treated like background noise.

An afterthought.

A rushed phone call.
A half-written email.
A vague instruction on site.

Then everyone stands around wondering why:

  • Work gets redone

  • Crews get frustrated

  • Trust breaks down

  • Good people quit

This isn’t complicated.

If the message isn’t clear, the work won’t be either.

I’ve spent 25 years in construction watching the same pattern repeat:
It’s rarely the technical side that fails.

It’s the conversation before the work ever starts.

Someone didn’t think it through.
Someone didn’t say it clearly.
Someone assumed instead of confirming.

And now the job pays for it.

Here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear:

Communication is not a “soft skill” in construction.
It’s an operational skill.

It drives:

  • Productivity

  • Safety

  • Profit

  • Reputation

Ignore it, and everything else gets harder.

Treat it seriously, and everything else gets easier.

Simple as that.
